Step 1

The one idea

い

Behaves like a verb

Carries its own tense.

さむい → さむかった
な

Behaves like a noun

Needs だ/です for tense.

しずか → しずかでした

さむい alone is a full sentence: “It’s cold.” しずか alone is just the word “quiet.” It needs だ/です to become a sentence.

Everything on this page follows from this one difference.

Step 2

Which class is it?

い-adjective: the い is written in hiragana after the kanji. 高たかい, 寒さむい, 面白おもしろい, 楽たのしい.

な-adjective: everything else:

⚠ Common exceptions
嫌きらい (きらい) has a hiragana い but is a な-adjective: 嫌きらいな人ひと. It comes from the verb 嫌きらう.
Tip Shortcut: katakana word → な. Two-kanji word → な. Native word ending in hiragana い → い.
Step 3

The です trap

です does a different job for each class.

い-adjectiveな-adjective
Tense lives inthe adjectiveです/だ
Pastさむかったですしずかでした
So です…never changesbecomes でした
さむいでしたさむかったです
しずかかったですしずかでした

With い-adjectives, です only adds politeness. With な-adjectives, です carries the tense.

Step 4

Full conjugation

さむいPlainPolite
Presentさむいさむいです
Negativeさむくないさむくないです
Pastさむかったさむかったです
Neg. pastさむくなかったさむくなかったです
しずかPlainPolite
Presentしずかだしずかです
Negativeしずかじゃないしずかじゃないです
Pastしずかだったしずかでした
Neg. pastしずかじゃなかったしずかじゃなかったです

More formal: じゃ → では (しずかではありません), and さむくないです → さむくありません. All correct.

⚠ Common exceptions
いい conjugates from its older form よい: よくない, よかった, よくなかった (not ✕いくない, ✕いかった). Same for かっこいい → かっこよかった.
Step 5

The four jobs

Jobいな
End a sentenceさむいですしずかです
Describe a nounさむいひしずかなへや
Join (“and”)さむくてしずかで
Describe a verbさむくしずかに

な appears before nouns and noun-like words (しずかなとき, しずかなんです), never before です: ✕しずかなです.

Negatives work before nouns too: さむくないひ, しずかじゃないへや.

Step 6

Becoming, too much, like

なるBecome. Uses the “describe a verb” form: さむくなる, ゆうめいになる, よくなる.
すぎるToo much. い drops its い; な adds it directly: あますぎる, かんたんすぎる, よすぎる. Not ✕あまいすぎる.
みたいLike, resembling. It’s a な-adjective: レモンみたいなオレンジ.
ほうがComparing: オレンジのほうがすきです.
がすき, きらい and ほしい take が: あおがすきです (not ✕あおをすきです).
Step 7

Seems, thinks, if

そうLooks like. い drops its い; な adds it: おいしそう, かんたんそう. いい → よさそう, ない → なさそう. The result is a な-adjective: おいしそうなケーキ.
とおもうUse the plain form. な needs だ: おいしいとおもう, ゆうめいだとおもう, ゆうめいだったとおもう (not ✕ゆうめいでしたとおもう).
ければ/ならIf. い → ければ: やすければ. な → なら: しずかなら. いい → よければ. Or use たら: さむかったら, しずかだったら.
Tip Two different そう: おいしそうです = it looks tasty. おいしいそうです = I hear it’s tasty.
Step 8

Traps

さむいでしたさむかったです
いかった / いくないよかった / よくない
しずかへやしずかなへや
しずかなですしずかです
きれいくないきれいじゃないきれい is な
あまいすぎるあますぎる
あおをすきですあおがすきです
⚠ Common exceptions
同おなじ (おなじ) is な but takes no な before a noun: おなじひと. It does before んです: おなじなんです.
違ちがう (ちがう) is a verb, not an adjective: ちがいます, ちがった.
Step 9

Why the endings look this way

Optional, but it turns four rules into one.

The い of さむい is the present-tense ending. さむ is the stem. Swap い for く and you get the “more is coming” form, like いき in いきます:

かった only looks irregular. It’s くあった worn down over centuries.
